On December 3rd, the seventh night of Chanukah, the Dallas Mavericks welcomed the Jewish community of Dallas with open arms. Chabad of Dallas hosted an incredible event, where families, rabbis, Jewish teens, as well as even our own Israeli basketball pro, Gal Mekel, gathered to celebrate an amazing holiday. The evening was filled with joyful activities, from the meet and greet with Gal, the awesome Hebrew Mavericks t-shirts and kippas that were distributed, to even a menorah lighting by the well known owner of the Mavericks, Mark Cuban. A kosher food truck cooked for hundreds that gathered to immerse themselves in the holiday spirit.
Our very own international CTeen leader, Stephanie Blitshtein, commented on this incredible event, “It was such a cool event that brought together all the Jews of the area to celebrate the Festival of Lights.” Later that night, her sister Vicky exclaimed, “So amazing seeing the Jewish people of Dallas come together to celebrate such an amazing event! With our very own MAVS players and owner being Jewish, the event was awesome! And meet and greet with Gal Mekel was my favorite part!”
Everybody around only had raving comments about this event. It is always great to see a community come together and unite for one celebratory purpose. Chanukah is a time for joyful gathering, as well as contemplating the miracles of Chanukah. At the event, I marveled at the miracles of Chanukah, however in a slightly different perspective. To me, the miracle of Chanukah was even more special now, because of all the people I saw brought together as one. The essence of Chanukah and what it is all about to be Jewish was undoubtedly evoked.
